Similar to enjoying the scenery, sitting and watching people in a park, or installing a CCTV and watching the action, I observe people through the Twitter streaming data system I built. My view is obtained by keyword-filtering in this hypothetical space instead of my sight or camera angle in real space. I enjoy watching people’s thoughts and lives relevant to the specific keyword which I typed in then. On certain days, I searched for keywords indicating current time and date such as “1PM”, “October 24” or “Friday 9PM”, which yielded tweets such as “Let’s meet up at the performance hall at 1pm today” or “On October 24, Min-hee Kang’s Album Release”. As such, I was able to observe the different activities of various people at one shared timeframe. Moreover, I searched for and researched the people and the topics and mimicked their actions in order to replace my time with their one. I created a programing code with python for TTS(text to speech software), reading the tweets in real time to prepare for the cases in which I cannot be in front of the computer. One day, I wondered what people are laughing about and searched “hahahaha” for the keyword by chance. At this moment, The properties which twitter data actually has potentially, the overexposure, inaccuracy, non-filtering, exaggeration and fake advertises are laid bare with the tweets with “hahahaha.” At the same time, the multiple sound of “hahahaha” read from TTS dramatizes and satirizes naivety of surveilling eyes which watches what has been seen. I wanted to talk about the meaninglessness of the observer, who observe what is seen and doesn’t get observed by others.
